Summer Seasonal Tips

Surviving the July heat — watering rules, plant stress, and the irrigation realities most homeowners miss.

Home/Seasonal Tips/Summer Seasonal Tips

Capture the moisture

Topdress your planting beds with shredded hardwood mulch. It not only retains the moisture in the ground, it also acts as a weed barrier and gives your planting beds a fresh look.

Watering & plant stress

Monitor your landscape closely and make adjustments to watering times as needed. Shaded or protected areas may need less water than other zones. We recommend deep root watering of any trees and shrubs that may be showing signs of stress.

Four irrigation rules to get right

  • Schedule all cycles in early morning so watering is complete by sunrise. This avoids water lost to daytime evaporation and afternoon/evening winds.
  • Water roses at the base of plants — avoid getting water on the leaves to help prevent black spots.
  • Don't water on windy or rainy days.
  • For newly planted seed, water just enough to keep the area moist for about two to three weeks (typical germination window). Skip a day and the seed dries out and dies.
